Thing 15, 16 Technorati and Tagging

Well, I am seriously lagging behind in completing the 23 Things, but I keep plugging away at it.  There’s a lot going on at the Technorati website.  I used the tag cloud and understand how that works a little better.  I did try to search, but the site was having some problems, so that made it a little frustrating for a first time user.

I did go to google blogsearch and found that quite fun, more user friendly and a less visually busy site.  I’ve seen quite a few blogs that start out with many posts and then seem to fade and fade away.  I did find some rather sweet pictures of a library staff when I searched for “librarians AND batgirl”.

Thing 14 del.icio.us

I’ve played around with del.icio.us a little bit, looked at what some others have posted and posted a few links and added some tags myself.  I think this has enormous potential for libraries in towns where many folks do not have access or do not own computers.  Also valuable for research that students might be doing.  Students could bookmark sites one day and return to them another day.  Also valuable for the reference desk, much easier than searching through favorites to find links that we use often in answering questions from patrons.  Here’s my link, which I will be adding to on a regular basis from now on.  Very exciting!

Forgot to add link to my library on library thing..

Well, I have been trying to use the create a widget thing on library thing to connect my library to my blog – but no success.  I click on “make it” and then the window on the right reads paste into your HTML – hmmm

I tried clicking on HTML when I post and then pasting…nope.

I tried pasting into different widgets…nope.

I’m stumped.  But I found the web link in my profile and THAT I can paste here.  www.librarything.com/catalog/walkwoman

But I have found out the area where I both lack knowledge and self confidence.  Bringing info or images from one place to another.  But I’m working on it!

Thing 13 – Library Thing

Well, this was lots of fun! I love Library Thing and hope our library will be able to use it also.  I’ve added my books and tags and a couple of reviews.

Thing 12 Success Yes the Avatar has appeared on my blog!

My little librarian yogi now appears on my blog and it was sort of fun putting her together, gave me a kind of high-tech paper dolls type of feeling.

Some of the other staff were very interested in what I was doing/playing with.  But I told them it was for the 23 Things course and they could play too!

Thing 11 Facebook

I set up a Facebook account with my alias, Penelope Weathersfield and played around on the site.  Some of the Facebook pages and other social network pages remind me of blog pages…are they used for the same purpose by certain groups (libraries, businesses)?

Thing 10 Social Networks

Well, at the risk of being branded a middle aged techno phobe – I’ll be honest.  I don’t like them.  These are first thoughts: social networking seems at the same time both too personal and too impersonal.  I know the kids love it, but it somehow seems like quasi-relationships are formed – not relationships as I have known them.  Maybe the definition of personal relationships is changing.  I just don’t see this a something that brings people together  – it seems to further isolate folks as they sit at the computer.

Of course these are my very first reactions and thoughts…okay I’m ready for the comments!

No Gobbledy Gook, I think!

State Library - Victoria Austrailia State Library – Victoria, Australia-by Waltonics

Okay, so this is what I did and I think it worked.  I found a photo I wanted on Flickr.  I right-clicked on the photo and then saved the photo to MyPictures on my computer.  On my wordpress blog I clicked on Write Post, then scrolled down the page.  Here is a place that I can upload the photo and when I am finished, click on send to editor and the photo appears up in the test area of Write Post.  Ta-Da!

AH -HA!

Library stacks  Well, I have figured out how to upload a photo without all the gobbledy gook of last time.  But let’s see if I can figure out how to do the same in flickr….
